The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the revised headset rule, according to AFCA executive director Todd Berry.
Under the new rule FBS teams will be limited to 23 headsets on game days, with three designated as "listen-only" devices to be used only by individuals within 10 years of graduation or their playing eligibility.
Originally the rule, which came via the Division I Football Oversight Committee, placed a limit of 20 headsets and limited teams to just four coaches or graduate assistants in the press box during games.
Alabama coach Nick Saban and Auburn coach Gus Malzahn both voiced displeasure with the rule, which Malzahn called "a joke" during SEC Spring Meetings.
