I, like most people in the South, have a Katrina story.
I was living 1100 miles away as Katrina was making its landfall across the Gulf, destroying most of Mississippi, a lot of Alabama, and utterly devastating Louisiana.
Sitting in a trial course, we were free associating on words to build themes for opening arguments and whatnot, when someone threw out "Katrina." It came my turn to participate, but all I was transfixed on the increasingly dire reports trickle in from New Orleans on CNN. My mind and heart were quite literally one thousand miles away, when the first word I threw back was "home.
