The 1968 football season culminated in one of the most shocking upsets in the sport's history. The New York Jets, the champions of the AFL, defeated the heavily favored Baltimore Colts, the champions of the NFL, in Super Bowl III.
The NFL's Green Bay Packers had turned back the AFL's champions by 25 and 19 points in the first two world championship games between the two leagues, with former Alabama quarterback Bart Starr winning the MVP Award for both games.
For the third Super Bowl, another former Alabama quarterback, Joe Namath, guaranteed the Jets would beat the NFL champion.
