In a statement released by the team on Sunday, Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie announced he has been diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. According to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, APL is considered to be the most curable subtype of leukemia in adults.
Metchie said he expects to make a recovery at a later date but will not be focusing on football and will likely not play this season.
“Recently I was diagnosed with APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia), the most curable form of Leukemia,” Metchie said in his statement. “I am currently receiving great medical care, am in good spirits and I expect to make a recovery at a later point in time.
