University of Alabama baseball coach Greg Goff learned much over the last 13 seasons as head coach at Montevallo, Campbell University and Louisiana Tech. But the foundation of his coaching philosophy goes back even further than that.
“I figured out a long time ago you can’t win the Kentucky Derby with a mule,” he said. “You better have some thoroughbreds.”
That lesson came from Goff’s final stop as an assistant, at Kentucky under then-coach Keith Madison from 2000-03. Madison was speaking to the importance of recruiting, and Goff took note of it.
He’s forged ahead with his own programs since then, working his way up from Division II Montevallo to Alabama.
