Deone Bucannon was a first-round draft choice from Washington State as a safety. After Bucannon's rookie NFL season, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher turned him into something called a moneybacker.
Bettcher moved Bucannon to inside linebacker in the Cardinals' base 3-4 defense, and the former safety excelled as a fast and physical in-the-box tackler even though he weighed 211 pounds.
Bettcher is the new defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, where he'll work with another hard-hitting safety. Strong safety Landon Collins has "probably done his best work close to the line," Giants coach Pat Shurmur said.
