BIRMINGHAM | Once he was known as the fastest man in the world. Now he can describe himself as a hall-of-famer.
Former University of Alabama and United States track star Calvin Smith was inducted into the state of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday evening as part of the class of 2016.
Smith won two Olympic medals, a gold in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the 4x100 meter relay and a bronze four years later in the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the 100 meters. He won three gold medals in the World Championships.
He set the world record in the 100 meters in 1983 with a then-world best time of 9.
