Former Alabama, 49ers standout Larry Roberts dead at age 53

Former Alabama and NFL defensive end Larry Roberts died on Monday at the age of 53, the San Francisco 49ers announced.

Since leaving the NFL, Roberts had developed diabetes. USA Today reported both of Roberts' legs had been amputated as a result of the disease.

"Life has thrown me a lot of curveballs," Roberts said in February.

Roberts spent all eight of his NFL seasons with the 49ers, playing from 1986 through 1993, when a knee injury ended his career prematurely.

Roberts played for back-to-back Super Bowl winners with San Francisco as the 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16 on Jan.
