Changes made 3 years ago mean Nick Saban now may have his best team ever

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In the spring of 2013, I sat in the office of Alabama coach Nick Saban and asked a simple question.

The Tide had won back-to-back national championships in 2011 and ’12, so what Saban was doing obviously was working. But I also knew Saban got to be the best college football coach of his generation by staying a step or two or three ahead of the competition.

“What’s next?” I asked.

Saban said there were two significant changes he wanted to make moving forward.

1. He would start recruiting defensive linemen who were a little lighter and quite a bit more athletic.
