Stubbornly, the University of Alabama quarterback competition insists on remaining a square peg.
Everyone connected with Alabama, starting with Nick Saban, would like for the five-candidate race to resolve itself on some sort of orderly fashion. It refuses to do so.
Saturday’s scrimmage was supposed to provide answers. Instead, Saban came out into the press room afterwards in a mood that wasn’t quite anger but seemed to veer between hope and exasperation. His description of the day was well-suited to a five-horse race: “it was sort of giddy-up, whoa.” In other words, just when one had the offensive engine running smoothly, the fuel would switch from high octane to lemonade.
