University of Alabama sophomore-to-be safety Shawn Burgess-Becker is transferring out of the program, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.
Burgess-Becker arrived in Tuscaloosa as a four-star recruit and the nation's 11th-rated safety. He committed to UA coach Nick Saban on A-Day in April of 2014 along with heralded wide receiver and teammate Calvin Ridley.
Listed on the team's official roster at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, Becker-Burgess played in 13 games, seeing his most action on special teams. He registered three solo tackles.
With his departure, the Alabama secondary is down to just four safeties (Eddie Jackson, Ronnie Harrison, Deionte Thompson and Hootie Jones), not including nickelback Maurice Smith, who has practiced at safety, or Tony Brown, whose physical style of play would translate at safety if needed.
