Best of RBR: The 1967 Walk-ons, The Forgotten Pioneers of Alabama Football's Integration

Sports history is littered with dramatic emotional moments. However, some of them are not entirely true. Many sports historians have long debated over whether Babe Ruth actually called his shot or was just pointing at an opposing player in an intimidating way.

Another narrative that was repeated for decades was that when Southern Cal Trojans running back Sam Cunningham had such a big night in a win over the Crimson Tide in 1970 that it convinced Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and Alabama to integrate. Admittedly, it did help it along but in fact, Bryant had lobbied to integrate long before that fateful night in Birmingham and the Tide already had a black player on the team in 1970.
