Playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, the Fairfield Stags wanted to get the full experience at the Tuscaloosa Regional.

They almost got it.

Fairfield came within one strike of taking the University of Alabama, the No. 6 national seed, the full seven innings on Friday. UA backup catcher Carrigan Fain singled in a run with two outs in the sixth inning to invoke the mercy rule in an 8-0 victory at Rhoads Stadium.

Alabama improved to 43-12 and will play Washington today at 11 a.
