Exactly when Holcombe sustained the injury is not certain. No official timetable has been set for his return.
The surgery was disclosed by Greg Goff, coach of the Crimson Tide baseball team. Holcombe also competes in baseball as an outfielder.
His rehab will be important for a linebacker unit that has lost Reuben Foster, Tim Williams and Ryan Anderson to the NFL.
