Alabama Football almost didn’t make it to the national championship game against the undefeated Miami Hurricanes in 1992. The new commissioner of the SEC, Roy Kramer, took a big risk that year by putting in place the first head to head match up for the conference championship.
Undefeated Alabama Football under head coach Gene Stallings faced off against Steve Spurrier and the 3 loss Florida Gators in a game that was called foul by other head coaches and conference commissioners and foolish by almost everyone else.
Alabama gained nothing from the game and risked a shot at the title.
