Until getting into a shootout in 1996, Alabama defensive line coach Karl Dunbar was an undercover officer as a member of the Opelousas (La.) Police Department. He was once known as the “Human Battering Ram” for his ability to knock down doors during bust operations.
These details were included in a story by Matt Zenitz of AL.com. It was after that shootout that Dunbar was urged by his wife to change his line of work.

He began as the freshman coach at Opelousas High School and picked up his first college job in 1998, when he coached the defensive line at Nicholls (State).
