Alabama senior defensive back Maurice Smith has been granted his release and is weighing a transfer, 247Sports has reported.
Smith, a former four-star recruit from Sugar Land, Texas, was the Crimson Tide’s first-team “Star,” or nickelback, during spring practice and started at the position on the first-team defense team during the team’s spring game in April.
Smith, a true junior last season, has already graduated with his undergraduate degree. NCAA rules allow graduate students to transfer without sitting out a season.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Smith has played in 41 games during his Alabama career, including all 15 during the Crimson Tide’s national championship run last season.
