ACC Commissioner breaks down why he feels SMU should make playoff if it loses ACC title game

The ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips feels SMU should make the College Football Playoff even if they lose to Clemson in the conference championship game on Saturday.

If SMU is defeated by Clemson, a debate over who deserves to be in the playoff between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Mustangs will officially begin. Phillips feels SMU should get the nod.

“Unequivocally, SMU needs to be in,” Phillips said on ESPN’s College Gameday. “They are 11-1. They are 8-0 in the conference. There is two teams in 68 power four schools that went undefeated in the conference, the Oregon Ducks and the SMU Mustangs…They have more power four wins than Texas does, and if you start take teams in championship weekend that are suppose to be protected inside the 11 or 12, and some sit home and others have to play and you can potentially lose, disinvited to the championship, you have turned it into the invitational.
