It’s hard to believe that Saturday marks the 25th anniversary of the SEC championship game.
The first two games – between Alabama and Florida, of course – were played in the Old Gray Lady known as Legion Field in Birmingham. Alabama won the first, Florida the second and the concept was off and running.
Then, when those running the game in Birmingham came up short of their guaranteed payment to the SEC, then-commissioner Roy Kramer exercised a clause in the contract and moved the game to Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. The game has been an annual sellout ever since.
