1965 SEC rushing leader Steve Bowman dead at age 72

Steve Bowman, an All-SEC running back for two of Alabama's national-championship teams, died on Friday.

Bowman, a resident of Centreville, died at Bibb Medical Center. He was 72 years old.

Bowman was the leading rusher for Alabama's SEC championship teams in 1964 and 1965. He ran for 536 yards and eight touchdowns on 106 carries in 1964 and 770 yards and six touchdowns on 153 carries in 1965, when he also led the SEC in rushing.

Playing for coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, Bowman was named All-SEC as a fullback in 1964 and as a halfback in 1965.
