The No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide continued their march to a perfect season Saturday, beating hated rival #13 Auburn Tigers 30-12. Alabama fell behind 3-0 early, but took a 10-3 lead in the first quarter and never gave it up. At 12-1, Alabama is in perfect position to secure the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.
But the story of the game was really how the Alabama defense shut down the Auburn offense. Auburn had just 182 yards of offense and were a brutal 2 of 12 on third down. Even when they had good field position, they failed to score a TD, settling for four field goals.
Auburn's offense was a mess for much of the game. Two QBs played, plus Chandler Cox threw two passes, as John Franklin III and Jeremy Johnson played with Sean White hurt. The three combined for STATS. The normally potent Auburn ground game had nothing going against the stout Alabama defense. The Tigers mustered just 66 yards on 26 carries.
Jalen Hurts wasn't perfect in this one, but did lead the offense. He completed 27 of 36 passes for 286 yards, two TDs and two INTs. He also added 37 yards and a score on the ground. His favorite target was ArDarius Stewart, who had 10 catches for 127 yards and a score. Alabama's rushing attack racked up 203 yards on 44 carries.
The Crimson Tide will play Florida in the SEC Championship game next week. The Tigers will play in a to-be-determined bowl game.
