The ACC set a record with seven 1,000-yard rushers a season ago.
That number was very nearly eight.
NC State running back Matt Dayes was well on his way to a 1,000-yard season of his own, until he tore a ligament in his big toe against Clemson while trying to keep a defender away from Jacoby Brissett. With his foot planted awkwardly, Dayes’ toe bent all the way back.
Season over with five games remaining. At 865 yards rushing.
But what upset him most was not failing to reach that milestone. What upset him was the feeling that he let his teammates down, especially as the unquestioned leader of his group following Shad Thornton’s dismissal from the team.
