Deshaun Watson threw 70 passes last Saturday. That’s an astonishing number for a team that a) was ahead nearly the entire game and b) ran for more than 3,000 yards last season.
But when it comes to Clemson’s ground game, last season is certainly not this season, and Watson’s passing — including 22 plays originally called as runs, according to co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott — is the Tigers’ best weapon.
Against Pitt, it makes some sense. The Panthers are very good up front, as evidenced by Clemson’s inability to pick up a single yard on back-to-back plays that would’ve iced the game.
