West Virginia University has one of the most prolific scoring offenses in college football today and it all begins with Geno Smith. Smith is the conductor, excuse me quarterback, of this impressive offense.
In the last two games Smith had more touchdown passes than in completions. Against James Madison University, who is ranked #5 in the FCS, Smith completed 34 passes out of 39 attempts for 411 yards in just three quarters.
Under Smith the offense scored on their first four drives.
Smith is now the official front runner for the Heisman after USC’s Quarterback Matt Barkley’s unimpressive game against Stanford.
Although it is still early in the season, if Smith continues to produce at this level he will be the obvious cannidate for the Heisman.
Many people will say that although Smith’s numbers are incredible, WVU so far has not played any significant teams. This may be true but Dana Holgorsen is giving us another reason why we should be impressed.
“Throwing completions is awesome; throwing touchdowns is awesome, but taking care of the football is what is most important,” said Holgorsen. “Smith is perfect on turnover percentage, hasn't thrown an interception and hasn't taken a sac.”
Adding to his Heisman candidacy, Smith set a school record in career passing yards, breaking Marc Bulger’s record of all time passing leader at WVU. Smith now has 8,191 yards and counting.
Students at WVU are now getting involved in Smith’s campaign for the Heisman. Using social media sites like twitter, they have started a twitter profile @Geno4Heisman; and a website http://genosmith4heisman.com/
