The Washington Redskins and quarterback Kirk Cousins have hit a snag in their contract extension talks. According to Adam Schefter, the Redskins and Kirk Cousins have broken off contract talks and no further ones are scheduled at the moment.
Cousins is an impending free agent, and the Redskins were hoping to lock him up in a long-term contract. The two sides could easily be several million dollars apart, as Cousins has proven himself for just one season. For more on Cousins' contract talks, download the Chat Sports Android and iPhone app.
Today also marks the first day the Redskins can use the franchise tag, and that might be the best option for both sides. It'll be expensive for one season, but it will allow both the team and Cousins to get a better handle on what the young QB's true value is. The team has until March 1st to apply the tag.
The one thing the Redskins can't do is let Cousins hit the open market. If that happens, teams like the Cleveland Browns or Houston Texans could easily overpay for Cousins and steal him from Washington. But with the franchise tag an option, that shouldn't happen.
