The Cubs and Cardinals were thought to be going toe-to-toe for Heyward's services, but the Nationals have jumped into the race late.
Heyward is thought to be the most coveted position player in the free agency class, and is sure to score big. He is reportedly asking for a contract in the 8- or 9-year range for around $200 million.
St. Louis acquired Heyward in a trade with the Atlanta Braves before last season, partially to get a leg up in their free agency pursuit of him this offseason. He's been their top free agent target all offseason.
