When the Washington Capitals take on the New York Islanders on Monday night, they'll have the chance to end 2014 - and the month of December in particular - on a high. The Caps have just two regulation losses in December (a 4-3 loss to Vancouver back on the 2nd and last Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers), and a win would bump up their record to 9-2-2 since December 1.
Now tied for 3rd place in the Metropolitan division, the Caps have climbed back into playoff contention...but they're currently neck and neck with the New York Rangers at 42 points, with the Rangers having played two fewer games. Washington's resurgence has been thanks to the form of goalie Braden Holtby, who has a stellar .933 save percentage in December along with just 1.98 GAA. The Caps have taken points from 10 of their last 11 games.
