The Texas Longhorns offered a scholarship to top junior college defensive tackle Handsome Tanielu on Thursday, causing him to reconsider all of his options.
Tanielu, a four-star prospect, was expected to announce his college decision on Wednesday but decided to wait after the Longhorns have made a late push, capped off by the offer. He had previously committed to Utah, but is also considering BYU, Boise State, and Oregon State along with the Longhorns and the Utes.
“Coach (Vance) Bedford actually called me and offered over the phone,” Tanielu said. “He feels like I am the perfect fit for stuffing the run inside as a defensive tackle. I was really excited about the offer.
"It’s the Texas Longhorns, man. I like the fact that the school has tradition and has the potential to become a great program with the current coaching staff. I like them.”
The 6'2", 305-pounder Tanuelu is the top junior college prospect in the nation and recorded 36 tackles, including five for loss, and three sacks this season for Snow Community College. Tanuelu, a Hawaii native, did not qualify coming out of high school and went on a two-year mission before going to Snow C.C.
