Some people don't understand sports fans. They don't understand why we wear the same jerseys, hats, and apparel as our favorite teams and players every single game or match. It's the American way of life.
They don't get why we paint our bodies for a -12º game in the middle of December just to see 22 little specks on a field run around. They say, "the best seat in the house is literally in the house." These people, yes these bandwagon fans, just don't deserve their teams to win. EVER.
What a lot of outside fans don't understand is why we yell at our favorite players. The other day, I watched Roger Federer lose to Andy Roddick for the third time in his career (He's beaten Roddick 21 times, 6 straight before this loss). When the dust settled from my mini temper tantrum, I had broken a cd, tore a notebook in half, yelled about 8 different obscenities in 2 different languages at Roger Federer and Andy Roddick, thrown everything in sight on the ground, and hurt my shoulder from excessive gestures of displeasure.
I yelled at Roger Federer, and I'm pretty sure he heard me all the way in Miami. I've got a pretty loud voice, so I have no doubt he head me and is currently sending an apologetic letter to my residence. You just don't lose to Andy Roddick, Rog. Things I said: "I HATE YOU FEDERER." "YOU ARE THE WORST TENNIS PLAYER EVER." (I think that was the biggest insult, because he's the greatest ever. "YOU SHOULD RETIRE!" (I hope he never, ever retires. EVER.
So why do we do it? The can't hear us through the tv, they don't know we exist, and they are our favorite players!
I've noticed a lot of my friends (acquaintances) yell at players by their first name when they do something good and by their last name when the suck beyond belief. Example: Back when Donovan McNabb was good on the Eagles, I watched the Superbowl against the Patriots with him. Every time the Chunky Soup spokesman made a bad play, which was frequent, i heard a shriek followed by "YOU SUCK MCNABB! BENCH HIM REID." and "MCSCABB YOU ARE LITERALLY THE WORST QUARTERBACK IN THE HISTORY OF FOOTBALL!" A little rough, but it WAS the Super Bowl. And every time he did something good, maybe 3 times during that whole game, I heard, "Way to go Donovan! You rock!"
This is quite prevalent when you attend a baseball game in person. While your money is being sucked out of your wallet by a $7 hot dog and a $6 Water Beer, you can hear, "YOU SUCK JETER." Well maybe not him, but there are countless others. And when someone hits a Home Run, you hear, "WAY TO GO DEREK!"
So, as fans we are so hot and cold on our team. I can't imagine what it's like for Kansas City Royals fans. All I know, is that I will continue to scream at my favorite players and teams because, well, I affect the team with my cheering. Duh.
It's fun to yell at our players, it's even more fun to yell at player we hate on other teams, right Barry Bonds?
