The #19 TCU Horned Frogs have already been eliminated from Big 12 title contention, but that won't make Friday's triumph over the rival #7 Baylor Bears any less sweet.
Battling a constant, heavy rainstorm and sloppy offense play for the majority of the night, TCU QB Trevone Boykin's eight-yard TD pass to WR KaVontae Turpin in double overtime effectively closed the book on a dramatic 28-21 win.
With Turpin's TD reception in hand, TCU's defensive front stood up Baylor's offensive line on the ensuing Bears possession, stuffing RB Devin Chafin on a 4th-and-1 at the TCU 16 to put a bow on things.
It was a fitting defense-focused ending for an abnormally low scoring game by two of the best offenses going in the nation today. Last year the teams combined for 119 points and just 11 punts in Baylor's 61-58 comeback victory. The squads combined for just 49 points and a staggering 23 punts in this mucky, out-of-sync affair.
Trevone Boykin had one of his least effective games of the year in his return from injury, going 18 of 33 for just 148 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He was also kept in check on the ground, gaining just 16 yards on 14 carries.
However, he gutted up at the end by leading TCU to two scores in two OT periods -- ultimately outshining Baylor QB Chris Johnson (7 of 24, 62 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) while nullifying a 273-154 rushing yardage advantage for the Bears.
With the victory, TCU (10-2) secures its 10th double-digit win season under head coach Gary Patterson. Even better for the Horned Frogs, Friday's win eliminates hated Baylor (9-2) from the Big 12 title picture and the College Football Playoff race for all intents and purposes. TCU will await its bowl fate with its regular season now completed, while Baylor heads home to face Texas in its season finale next week.
