The Rays will sign former first baseman Carlos Pena to a 1-day contract on Friday. He will then announce his retirement, the team announced on Wednesday.
Pena, who is currently serving as an analyst for the MLB Network, last appeared in the big leagues in 2014 when he played 18 games for the Texas Rangers. Pena played for the Devil Rays in 2007 and the Rays from 2008 through 2010 and again in 2012.
In five years with the Rays, Pena hit 163 home runs, including 46 in 2007 after he only made the opening day roster because of an injury.
