The Champions League is the pinnacle of European club football and it is here that many heroes are made. For most, it is due to goal scoring, and as we look forward to the new 2019/20 Champions League competition beginning, here is a look at the current all-time top scorers.
#5 Ruud Van Nistelrooy – 56 Goals
Ruud had a great career and was known for being in the right place at the right time. Many of his goals would purely be down to his positioning on the field and nothing else, with the ball falling to him so he could slot it home from just a few yards away.
Van Nistelrooy has retired from football so is unable to add to his current total, and with Robert Lewandowski in behind on 53 goals, it seems only a matter of time before the Dutchman falls out of the top five.
#4 Karim Benzema – 60 Goals
Benzema has steadily worked his way up the ranks in this competition despite never really being the star man at Real Madrid. He scored a few goals for Lyon before his move to the Spanish side, and since then he continues to find the back of the net. Being active will give him the opportunity to move further up the list, with a Real Madrid legend ahead of him in third position, a player he will be looking to reach in the next couple of season.
#3 Raul – 71 Goals
An icon in Spanish football and for the club Real Madrid, Raul currently sits third in the list. He is in many ways similar to Ruud Van Nistelrooy in that he carved out his career by being in the right place at the right time a lot of the time, although he did have a little more to his game, which helped him secure the 71 goals he scored in this competition.
#2 Lionel Messi – 112 Goals
The top two have dominated European football for the past decade. Second on the list is Lionel Messi with an incredible 112 goals to his name for Barcelona. The tricky Argentinian has done all his European playing and scoring for that club, and cemented his name into their history.
Barcelona are amongst the favorites to win the title during the upcoming 2019/20 season, and many punters will be backing them ahead of the start to this great competition. Those looking for a bet should take a look at this site, where you can find a range of bookmakers who are already taking bets on this competition.
#1 Cristiano Ronaldo -126 Goals
From the moment you saw Messi at number two, guessing who would be number one became much easier. Ronaldo has been a thorn in the side of many teams in Europe but unlike Messi he has played for three clubs in the competition, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
It is at Juventus where he is now, and he was specifically bought by the club to try and help them lift the Champions League. He is 34 now though, and coming towards the end of his career. The bookmakers across at newbettingoffers.co.uk all have Juventus amongst the favorites for this year’s competition, where Ronaldo will be looking to shine again and add to the 126 goals he already has to his name.
