The United States Women's soccer team's run of dominance in the 2015 World Cup ended with an offensive outburst for the ages, with three Carli Lloyd tallies in the first 16 minutes of Sunday's final against Japan pacing the U.S en route to a 5-2 victory in Vancouver, BC.
USA would race out to a 4-0 lead early with a historic barrage of goals that took Japan out of things before the game even really began. Lloyd's third goal, a long prayer from way downfield, was an early capper for a USA squad that now celebrates its first World Cup win since 1999.
The U.S. reached this year's final following a 2-0 victory over #1-ranked Germany in a semifinal matchup on Tuesday, while Japan defeated England, 2-1, in Edmonton in the other semifinal. This final was a rematch of the gutting 2011 championship game where the United States lost to Japan in a penalty-kick shootout.
The United States did get a measure of revenge a year later, defeating Japan to win Olympic gold in London. However, this World Cup victory serves as vindication for USA squad veterans such as Abby Wambach who came on as a sub late in Sunday's win and soaked in the adulation of the pro-USA crowd in Vancouver.
