Julian Green, winger for Bayern Munich, has chosen to play for the U.S. over Germany. He was born in Tampa, Florida, but since his mother is from Germany he has dual citizenship—allowing him to play for either country.
During his youth days, Green made six total appearances with both the U-16 and U-17 German National Teams. At U-18, he played for the U.S. and scored a goal against the Netherlands. Green then went on to score 10 goals for Germany on the U-19 National Team in 2012-2013.
On March 18, Jurgen Klinnsman, head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team, tweeted about Green's decision to change his allegiance:
“We are absolutely thrilled that Julian Green has chosen to be a part of the U.S. National Team Programs!"
— Jürgen Klinsmann (@J_Klinsmann) March 18, 2014
Green currently plays for Bayern Munich's second team in the German Regionalliga. He is a versatile winger/forward who has scored 15 goals in 21 appearances. While he has only played in one first team match for Bayern Munich, his future is promising.
If the paperwork goes smoothly and recieves FIFA's stamp of approval in time, Green could be able to participate in the Mexico friendly in Glendale, Arizona on April 2.
It is uncertain whether Green will be chosen to represent the U.S. in Brazil this summer at the World Cup. Whether he does or not, he will be a great asset for this country.
Here are some of Green's best moments of his young career:
