Three different doctors have examined San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain's ailing right arm and all three have come up with the same diagnosis. Despite no ligament damage, there are bone chips in his elbow that need to be removed via surgery.
According to Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News, Cain hasn't decided when to have the procedure but will be on the shelf for a minimum of two months after the surgery takes place.
“There’s a good bit of bone chips in there,” Cain said, via Pavlovic's article on Friday. “We’re trying to figure out whether (surgery) is sometime soon or towards the end of the year. A lot of it depends on what the elbow is going to tell me.”
Cain threw off of flat ground on Friday to test his elbow and isn't optimistic about his chances of returning in 2014. However, Pavlovic notes that "he has not completely ruled it out. He said he would see how his arm feels Saturday before making a decision."
Cain indicates that the issues with his elbow have plagued him for 10 years.
“They’ve always been in there — it’s just that now (the bone chips) are mad at me and they’re letting me know about it,” he stated. “They’ve never been a problem before.”
