Mets general manager, Sandy Alderson tweeted today for the first time since April. At that point, he was just interested in showing the world a picture of his dog. This time, he wants everyone to know that he's ticked off about Mets' third baseman David Wright not starting for the NL in the All-Star game.
With a surge in voting in the last week, Giants' 3B Pablo Sandoval took over the top spot among NL third basemen. Wright has been one of the best hitters in baseball all season, while Sandoval missed a month with a broken bone in his hand. It's understandable that Alderson is upset, and Wright as well, but it's a bit childish for a GM to express their frustration towards the fans of a baseball team. Wright has as much of a fair shot at earning the starting nod as anyone else, the fans just didn't show up.
“Wright vs.Sandoval: A city of 8 million was outvoted by a city of 800,000,” Alderson tweeted on Monday , expressing his frustration.
His words got even more venomous on Tuesday.
“ASG election of "Kung Fu Panda" shows the value of a cute nickname. Surprised Giants fans didn't elect a "ball dude" to start at 3B,” he tweeted.
If anything, it's the system that is at fault. Fans were able to vote 25 times per day, per email address. Giants fans clearly outdid Mets fans. That said, Commissioner Bud Selig didn't think there was a problem with the way things turned out.
“They are sold out there every day and every night," Selig said, referring to Giants Stadium. "They reacted the way they did. ... I think for the most part, the lineups are very, very good.”
Selig doesn't think there needs to be a change in the system, and is happy with the way things turned out. If that's the case, teams with elite players, like the Mets, need to do a better job of getting ballots in the boxes.
Next time, Alderson, get your fans most excited about voting. As you said implied in your first tweet, there really isn't an excuse for 800,000 people outvoting 8 million.
