San Francisco got off to a fast start in Game 2, as Gregor Blanco hit a monster home run to lead off the game. Kansas City responded by scoring a run in the bottom of the inning and another in the second, taking the 2-1 lead.
The Giants tied the score in the top of the fourth, and it looked like we were in for a back-and-forth game.
That all changed in the bottom of the 6th inning, where the Royals exploded for five runs. Kansas City's outstanding defense and bullpen took things from there, as they held on for the 7-2 victory.
Turning Point: With the score 2-2 in the bottom of the 6th inning, Giants manager Bruce Bochy wanted to leave starting pitcher Jake Peavy as long as he could. Peavy gave up a lead-off single to Lorenzo Cain, and then walked Eric Hosmer on a full-count. That pitch was Peavy's last, and the bullpen struggled. The Royals ended up pushing five runs across in that inning on the bullpen, blowing the game wide open.
Key Stat: Kansas City got five hits in the bottom of the 6th, and were able to drive all but one baserunner across the plate (six players got on base due to the Hosmer walk). That efficiency was the reason they were able to turn a close game into a rout, and now have the momentum in the series.
Kansas City MVP: Second baseman Omar Infante was the biggest contributor to the Royals offensive explosion in tonight's game, going 2-3 with a double, a home run in the sixth, and two runs scored.
San Francisco MVP: Gregor Blanco provided the Giants with their only real highlight of the night on the leadoff home run. He finished 1-3 on the night with a walk.
What’s Next? Kansas City has now tied the World Series up a one game apiece. Game 3 will be in San Francisco on Friday with first pitch set for 8:07 p.m. ET on FOX.
