The San Francisco Giants may have lost out in the Jon Lester sweepstakes, but they appear ready to reload and try again on the free-agent market in a hurry.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, "the World Series champion Giants lost out on Pablo Sandoval and Jon Lester, are lukewarm on Chase Headley, but are now going hard for James Shields."
The Giants faced Shields a couple of times as a member of the Kansas City Royals in the 2014 World Series, but it was his entire body of work in 2014 that has likely sold Brian Sabean and the crew on "Big Game" James.
Shields finished in the top-6 of AL pitchers for the 6th-straight year in innings pitched, placing 4th among American League hurlers with 227. He finished 14-8 altogether with a 3.21 ERA, 180/44 K/BB ratio, and a WHIP of 1.181.
With Lester now out of the market, the Giants will likely have company in the pursuit of Shields. But, the Giants appear to be an early favorite when it comes to getting a deal done.
