In today's Giants rumors and news update, San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain's recent trip to the disabled list could end up landing Boston Red Sox starter Jake Peavy in the Bay Area.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Cain's health situation could have the Giants looking Peavy's way before the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline:
Now that Matt Cain is going on the DL for the #SFGiants, you wonder if a #Redsox Jake Peavy reunion with Bruce Bochy could be far behind?
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) July 21, 2014
Peavy spent the first five years of his career under Bochy's charge in San Diego from 2002-2006 as Bochy helped mold the righty into a dominant force on the mound. Peavy would win the NL Cy Young Award the first season after Bochy's departure to San Francisco (2007), but has credited the Giants skipper in the past for helping facilitate his early-career success.
2014, however, has been a trying year for Peavy in New England. He is currently 1-8 with a 4.59 ERA. If the season ended today, his 1.411 WHIP would constitute the worst mark of his career since his rookie season in 2002.
Regardless, Bochy's familiarity with Peavy and trust in the 33-year-old's stuff could be enough to bring him to San Francisco within the next week or so.
