In this Giants rumors and news update, the San Francisco Giants outrighted second baseman Brandon Hicks to Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday.
While Marco Scutaro's activation from the disabled list could very well be the boost the Giants need, the team also could be looking at Tampa Bay Rays infielder Ben Zobrist as a potential trade option before the July 31st deadline.
According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, "the Giants are considered atop the teams most interested in 2B/RF Ben Zobrist; the Reds and Mariners among others."
Zobrist is hitting .266/.352/.401 (113 OPS+) in 83 games with Tampa this season, continuing to function as one of the Rays' most consistent offensive and defensive producers in what has been a tough year in St. Petersburg.
The 33-year-old second baseman and two-time MLB All-Star has a $7.5 million team option for 2015 with a $500,000 buyout - making him an intriguing possibility for a Giants team which has been seemingly bereft of consistent production at second base all season long.
