That transition, however, may be postponed for a week. Jim Tomsula said during his Monday press conference that the 49ers have requested a one-game roster exemption for Simpson.
The NFL granted the request, meaning the receiver will be allowed to practice with the team, but the 49ers won’t be required to make a roster move during the short week. San Francisco has only three days to prepare for Thursday’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
That still leaves the possibility that the 49ers could make Simpson available for this week’s game, but Tomsula wouldn’t speak to the odds of that happening.
