Thomas has had several tryouts with teams this season, including the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs. Thomas nearly signed with the Texans after Arian Foster was injured, but the two sides couldn't come to an agreement.
Starting RB Carlos Hyde is a battling a foot injury, although he said he'll play Thursday.
Also on the 49ers roster are Jarryd Hayne, Reggie Bush and Mike Davis. Bush was signed as a free agent this offseason to be the team's third down back, but he's only played in three games this year. Thomas is best as a third-down back, so if signed, he could take Bush's playing time. With four RBs already on the roster, the 49ers would likely cut another RB if they decided to add Thomas.
