NFL Free Agency starts on March 9th, and the next few days will feature several San Francisco 49ers rumors. The team has nearly $50 million in cap space and several big needs to fill. The 49ers could easily be big players in free agency this year. With that in mind, here are a few of the more interesting rumors and news tidbits on the 49ers.
Colin Kaepernick Update
Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco, evidenced by his request for a trade. That's yet to happen yet, and an $11 million base salary is a steep one for any team to take on. The team might end up just cutting Kaepernick and letting him hit the open market. Kaepernick's future is very much up in the air and it will affect what the team does at QB for next season. Blaine Gabbert is still on the roster and the 49ers could target a QB in the draft or in free agency. And one name might be a real surprise.
49ers RGIII's First Choice?
It's only matter of time before Robert Griffin III is cut by the Washington Redskins this offseason. When that happens, he'll be a popular target for many teams and the 49ers could be one of them. In fact, ESPN's John Clayton says the 49ers could be Griffin's preferred landing spot.
"Clearly if Kaepernick’s gone, I could see RG3 in a 49ers uniform because I think that would be his first choice, even if they do draft a quarterback at No. 7," Clayton said. "RG3 could end up as a fallback to the Rams. He could compete for a backup job, maybe in Kansas City. Maybe compete for a starting job in Buffalo. But I think the No. 1 choice for him would be to go to San Francisco if Kaepernick’s gone."
RGIII could be a perfect fit for Chip Kelly's offense, although the same is true of Kaepernick. The 49ers will need to make a decision about their QB situation and it's going to be an interesting one no matter what.
Top Targets Include Doug Martin, Kelechi Osemele?
The 49ers have plenty of cap space and they could pursue several big names this offseason. Among the two most intriguing ones listed by the Sacramento Bee are RB Doug Martin and OG Kelechi Osemele. The Ravens might not be able to afford Osemele, who is one of the best OGs in the NFL. He'd be expensive, but he'd be an upgrade for the Niners.
Martin is one of the top free agent RBs this year. He's from the Bay Area and there have been some 49ers-Martin rumblings this offseason. He's also set to hit the open market as the Buccaneers won't meet his demands. The 49ers can afford Martin, but it's unclear if he is willing to split carries with Carlos Hyde. Keep an eye on CB Sean Smith and WR Marvin Jones as well. Smith has the size both Kelly and GM Trent Baalke like. Jones is one of the top WRs this season and went to Cal.
