The San Francisco 49ers have officially turned their attention to the offseason after hiring head coach Chip Kelly. Free agency and the NFL Draft are the main priorities, especially with the Senior Bowl having just finished and the Combine on the horizon. With that in mind, we've compiled the most interesting tidbits around the 49ers as the draft approaches:
Laquon Treadwell is San Francisco's top target?
The 49ers have the No. 7 overall pick in the draft, and with their big need for playmaking help at the receiver position, ESPN's Todd McShay expects them to go after Ole Miss receiver Laquon Treadwell:
"Chip Kelly must eventually solve the 49ers' QB situation, but if Goff and Wentz are off the board, it's likely not going to happen with this pick. The next-best option: Treadwell, who is this draft's clear-cut top wide receiver. He might not blaze a 4.3 40 at the combine, but he's a legit difference-maker at every level of the field. Treadwell reminds me a lot of Dez Bryant physically when he was coming out of Oklahoma State. This is a big, strong receiver with a very good combination of athletic ability, body control and ball skills."
NFL Executive Says He Wouldn't Take Carson Wentz In Round 1
NFL.com's Lance Zierlein spoke with two NFL executives and neither were very impressed with North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz, who that San Francisco 49ers are contemplating drafting in the first round after Colin Kaepernick expressed his desire to leave the team.
"One said 'Boy, that North Dakota State kid is way overrated,'" Zierlein reported on his podcast. "And the other one texted me and said 'After watching him for a full week, there is no way I would draft Carson Wentz in the first round. Now, by most media accounts, the draft media, Carson Wentz did just fine. A lot of people called him a winner of draft day. Depends on what you're looking for. But that's an example of how people can see these prospects very, very differently."
Following a strong Senior Bowl showing, it seemed like Wentz had locked up his first round draft status. That's likely still the case, as the two executives seem to be in the minority regarding Wentz.
49ers haven't talked with Jared Goff
Cal quarterback Jared Goff is thought to be the top quarterback prospect in this draft, and with San Francisco's need for a QB, it's surprising that they haven't even talked with Goff yet, who says he "literally hasn't talked to anybody" with the 49ers yet. It seems like a perfect match with Goff playing his college ball in the Bay Area, but San Francisco doesn't seem interested.
