On Thursday morning, TMZ ran a story that alleged 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was under investigation for sexual assault following an incident in a Miami hotel earlier this month. As further details emerged throughout the day, it became clear that TMZ's story was at least slightly off the mark - Miami police were investigating the incident, but no charges were filed and no one had even been accused of a crime.
The 49ers quickly issued a statement through GM Trent Baalke that confirmed that they were aware of the investigation, but little else. The full incident report filed by police became available later Thursday afternoon, and it contained nothing that suggested an assault took place. Miami police also commented that the report had been "taken out of context".
On Friday morning, Colin Kaepernick addressed the TMZ article via his personal Twitter account:
(1/3) The charges made in the TMZ story and other stories I’ve seen are completely wrong. They make things up about me that never happened.
— Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) April 11, 2014
(2/3) I take great pride in who I am and what I do, but I guess sometimes you have to deal with someone who makes things up.
— Colin Kaepernick (@Kaepernick7) April 11, 2014
(3/3) I want to thank all of the people who have shared their encouraging sentiments. I assure you that your faith is not misplaced.
