The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a contract extension with running back Kendall Hunter through the 2015 NFL season, keeping him under contract and away from unrestricted free agency after the season.
As reported by Mike Wilkening of NBC's Pro Football Talk, "the 26-year-old Hunter is on injured reserve after suffering a season-ending ACL tear in his right knee in July. By re-signing with the Niners, he positions himself to be part of the backfield in 2015 should he return to health."
Hunter will be a part of an intriguing potential shuffle in the team's backfield come this offseason. Frank Gore is in the final year of his deal and will turn 32 come May. Rookie Carlos Hyde is currently being groomed for the starting role somewhere down the road.
While Hunter will likely once again play the backup come 2015, he could very well see extended snap counts if the Niners decide to let Gore walk to free agency.
