At exactly 1:30 ET on Thursday afternoon, American soccer legend Landon Donovan announced his retirement on Twitter:
After careful deliberation, I have decided that this will be my last season as a professional soccer player https://t.co/UuxXkXlYi1
— Landon Donovan (@landondonovan) August 7, 2014
That's a big story! There had been a few rumors about Donovan's intent to retire, and those were clearly confirmed when Donovan made his Facebook/Twitter announcement. That wasn't enough confirmation for someone, though, because 20 minutes after Donovan's post, we got this:
Sources: Donovan to retire after MLS season http://t.co/zZoJBsxcmg

You don't say!
Listen, ESPN, every single story doesn't have to come from "sources". When a player has personally announced his retirement, it's okay to tell readers that you heard it from them...not some shadowy insider living in Chris Broussard's attic.
