The Philadelphia Phillies are currently in the market for cost-effective players with upside, and one recently designated for assignment could provide a fit for the Phillies if they decide to look his way.
Following a five-year stint with the Chicago White Sox that saw his power develop but little else come to fruition, 25-year-old outfielder/first baseman Dayan Viciedo was placed on waivers by the White Sox this week.
Corey Seidman of CSN Philly believes the Phillies should put heavy thought into the notion of acquiring him.
"Could the Phillies be interested? They should be," Seidman wrote. "Viciedo is young enough, and although he doesn't have exorbitant upside, he does have the type of 25-home run power that is nearing extinction in the majors."
Viciedo hit .250 from 2012-14, with 60 home runs and 63 doubles, so the production is there from a power perspective. However, he had an alarming .294 on-base percentage while averaging 28 walks and 113 strikeouts per season over that span.
There's plenty to raise an eyebrow about there, but the Phillies might be willing to look past the negative for the chance at getting legit power on a cheap deal.
