Philadelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg announced his resignation in a press conference Friday afternoon.
The 55-year-old, who is a Hall of Fame second baseman with the Chicago Cubs, was named the interim manager late in the 2013 season, then had the interim tag removed before the 2014 season. He posted an overall record of 119-159.
"I do not like to lose. I hate to lose," Sandberg said. "I think that's the biggest thing that weighed on me."
The Phillies finished dead last in the NL East in 2014 with a 73-89 record, and are currently in last place (14.5 games back) this season at 26-48.
Pete Mackanin will as interim manager, and will take over for at least its weekend series against the Washington Nationals, the team said.
