The Eagles had their ups and downs in 2014, but one consistent bright spot was the emergence of Fletcher Cox as an All-Pro talent at DE. Cox racked up 61 tackles and 4 sacks in 2014, putting constant pressure on opposing quarterbacks and wreaking havoc in the backfield once he got past his man. The Eagles are well aware that Cox can be a significant part of their future, but they have to take action soon if they want to make sure he sticks around.
Cox's rookie deal is set to expire at the end of 2015, but he's now eligible for an extension or a total renegotiation. Everyone we've spoken to around the Eagles franchise - from the media all the way up to the front office - thinks it's only a matter of time before that happens.
Cox is just 24 years old, and he's already earned a 2nd-team All Pro nod in his third NFL season. There's no reason to think he can't continue to improve, and at this rate, there's no telling how high his ceiling could go. Chip Kelly has watched him quietly develop into one of the league's best young pass rushers, and it sounds very much like he and GM Howie Roseman are willing to get out the checkbook and make a new deal happen.
